Dr. VENDHAN GAJALAKSHMI, Director of Epidemiological Research Center

Physician Epidemiologist,is Director of the Epidemiological Research Center in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. She has more than 20 years of experience in the field of epidemiology and has ample experience in designing, implementing and analysing large-scale epidemiological studies.

She has been conducting epidemiological studies in the areas of tobacco use, alcohol use, diet, cancer and occupational hazards in collaboration with International Agency for Research on Cancer (WHO) (Lyon, France), WHO/SEARO-New Delhi (India), Clinical Trial Service Unit & Epidemiological Studies unit-University of Oxford (UK), Center for Disease Control & Prevention-Atlanta (USA) , World Bank (USA), Nagoya City University Medical School (Japan), Aichi Medical University (Japan) and Center for Global Health Research (University of Toronto, Canada).

She has received 'Visiting Scientist Award' for the year 2005-06 and worked as 'Visiting Scientist' at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), Lyon, France for one year from Nov' 2005 and her publication on "Smoking and mortality from tuberculosis and other diseases in India: retrospective study of 43,000 adult male deaths and 35,000 controls (Lancet 2003: 362; 507-15)" with Peto R, Kanaka S and Jha P is one of the twenty best research papers nominated for 'The Lancet's Paper of the Year, 2003'.
